Robert Bell grew up gardening and designing in Easton, Maryland.  An avid sailor, traveler, and plantsman, Bob began creating gardens for a local properties while in high school.  Starting with a small herb garden, Bob moved on to larger and larger canvases, ultimately renovating an overgrown one-acre boxwood garden in the Beaux Arts-style.

After graduating from Cornell University with a B.S. in landscape architecture, Bob moved to Washington, D.C to work with world-renowned landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden and Associates.  Known for their introduction of ornamental grasses to the American gardener’s palette, Oehme, van Sweden introduced Bob to the diverse range of regionally native plants and the sweeping, prairie-like “New American Garden” style.  Bob managed a wide variety of projects at Oehme, van Sweden including:

  • The Americana Manhasset shopping center, Manhasset, NY
  • New US. Embassy compound, Kathmandu, Nepal
  • New US Embassy compound, Bridgetown, Barbados
  • New US Embassy compound, Kabul, Afghanistan
  • Ridge Hill Lifestyle Center, Yonkers, NY
  • Display garden, Cornerstone Gardens, Sonoma, CA
  • Display garden, Chicago Flower Show, Chicago, IL
  • South Franklin Circle retirement community, Chagrin Falls, OH

In 2007 Bob left Oehme, van Sweden to expand his own design firm.  Bob currently resides in Washington, DC.
